Stability & Growth

2022 December Update

After two Covid19 years of interrupted schooling and chaotic home life, we are thrilled to have our students and our families get back into a healthy routine. Our teachers worked hard to overcome the damages of Covid19. Many students suffered academically, nutritionally, and health wise from the lack of learning environment and financial instability at home.
We are pleased to share that our 100 students have caught up academically and our daily attendance rate is over 85% (compared to the average of 60% in NGO / government schools in low income environments).
This is just one of the many achievements LHC, a small grassroots-funded nonprofit, accomplished in 2022.

Top School

LHC is now a government registered informal primary school. We are recognized in both the Nutun Bazaar slum and surrounding lower middle income area as the top school! Families see us as a much better option to the local government school because of the personalized care we take for our students. We continue to provide high quality teaching, lunch/nutrition supplements, and afternoon homework help sessions.

We hold weekly parent meetings to ensure that the value of education is instilled in the parents as well as the students.

lower middle class area

Healthy Kids

Vaccines and Vitamins

At the height of Omicron at the start of 2022, we organized neighborhood wide counselling about getting the Covid19 vaccine. Many heard scary conspiracy stories about how the vaccine might damage the brain. We dispelled that and made sure that 90% of our families got the vaccine!

Many of our students don't have 3 meals a day, so we continue our nutrition program to provide lunch or nutritional dry food (egg / milk/ fruits) every day.

Thanks to The Sameer Trust, our students also received free eye exams from an ophthalmologist, first time for most of the kids!

Energy Crisis

electricity cuts, no gas for cooking

The slum area was hard hit by the global energy crisis. We had many hours of electricity cuts daily. It was the height of summer in Dhaka and we couldn't use the fans, so the classrooms became very balmy and hot!  We also couldn't store much food in the fridge, so we kept mostly dry food. â€‹

For the past few months, natural gas lines are cut from 8am to 10pm in the area. Many families are struggling to cook their meals. We can only boil eggs early in the morning and try to prepare a hot nutritious meal for the students every few weeks by our self made wood stove seen here.

Adult Literacy

Now Grade 3 Reading Level

Many women in the slum area came from poor families that didn't value education for girls. Some women went to religious schools that didn't teach Bengali and some were pulled out of school to help with household chores.

This year, we graduated 2 batches of students from the Adult Literacy program! Each batch with 10 women. Now they have a grade 3 reading level are much more confident and capable in their daily life!
